Glorious gardens in small spaces

The tiniest yard or patio provides more than enough space for a glorious garden. A garden is a place of peace and tranquility that can be created no matter where you live.

The first step is to decide what you want from your garden. Do you want to create a private sanctuary or a functional space used for entertaining?

Here are some ways to create a truly satisfying garden that defies boundaries and makes your space feel larger:

  • Choose a theme for your garden: How about a scent theme. Pick plants such as sweet peas, lily of the valley or gardenias that will fill the air with a sweet-smelling fragrance. Create an herb theme, making your garden consist of all your favourite herbs. It’s important to have only one or two themes in a small garden.
  • Plant window boxes: Fill them with brightly coloured geraniums, heliotrope, caladium, coleus, lobelia, or begonias. For variety, add stocks such as a ‘dwarf ten week stock’, or an ‘evening stock’, which thrive in planting containers.
  • Add depth: Change the levels of your garden. Add steps and various heights of plants to create dimension for your garden and make it appear larger.
  • Put up a mirror: When decorating indoors, adding a mirror to a room is a common trick used to make a room appear larger. Try this in your garden. Mount a mirror outside your home or incorporate a mirror into the trellising to reflect your garden, making the area appear larger.
  • Add interest: Adding interesting objects and features to your garden, such as a sculpture or statue, can take the focus away from its size. Remember to add interest - not clutter.
  • Create privacy: Put up a trellis with climbing ivy, roses, or honeysuckle. This will create a feeling of intimacy and coziness that can be achieved with small gardens.
  • Think vertical: Consider buying an iron baking rack or a bookshelf to place magazines, books, and potted plants. This enables you to add more of your favourite things without taking up a lot of space in your garden.

When creating your garden remember to apply techniques used inside your apartment or home to create the look you want with the space you have.
