Spook up your home for Hallowe’en

It’s the time of year for ghosts, ghouls and goblins - Hallowe’en. If you are selling your home, a little classic Hallowe’en decorating will give potential buyers the signal that this is a real home, not just a house.

Here are some simple tricks (and treats) that will help you spook up your home for Halloween.

Jack-o-lanterns
Remember the days of carving a pumpkin with triangle eyes and nose and jagged teeth? Today’s jack-o-lanterns have gone high-tech, with intricate designs and ornate shapes. Patterns can easily be found in design books or on the Internet. Trace or draw the pattern onto paper. Then use a ballpoint pen to poke small dots into the pumpkin along the pattern lines. When you remove the paper, your design will be on the pumpkin, ready for you to start carving. And don’t discard the seeds you’ll scoop out of your masterpiece - toasting them in the oven will impart an enticing scent to your home, and provide a healthy snack treat for your family!

Spooky trees
If you have topiary trees or small shrubs in your yard, decorate them using orange lights with netting overtop. It’s an inexpensive touch that will give your home a haunting edge in the market.

Ghosts in the window
Hang cutouts of ghosts, bats, witches or cats in the windows. Even a simple bouquet of twigs lends a homey look when bound with raffia and placed on the windowsill. Not only will your decorations be visible from the street, but you’ll enjoy them from inside your home as well.

Centrepieces
Grace your table with an autumn centrepiece. Apples, gourds and decorative ears of corn are all great ingredients to combine with a few handfuls of leaves and display in a wicker basket. What could be simpler? You can even throw in a few pieces of cinnamon bark to add a whisper of pumpkin pie scent to the air.

Selling your home is easier when you show it off at its best. Hallowe’en gives you an opportunity to make sure your home festive for the fall season.
