November 16, 2001 Parks, trails and recreation spots: Burnaby and New Westminster Burnaby Bounded by the Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River, Burnaby is situated on the Burrard Peninsula east of Vancouver. It’s Canada’s third largest metropolitan area with a population of almost 180,000. Burnaby is second, only to the City of Vancouver, as a centre of employment and output in British Columbia. Burnaby is known as a city of abundant, well-defined and focused opportunities. It’s a great location for residential, commercial and industrial growth. It is also home to many beautiful parks and trails that are enjoyed by many. Located in the middle of the city is Burnaby Lake Regional Park, which is a stunning wildlife sanctuary. You’ll find views of mountains, water and a spectacular view of the city high atop Burnaby Mountain. If you’re looking for a park to play sports you can check out Kensington Part, which is one of Burnaby’s sports centres. It’s know for its popular pitch and putt greens, as well as sports fields that play host to softball in the summer and soccer during the winter. Thirty minutes from downtown Vancouver, this multi-faceted community offers acclaimed post-secondary institutions - BCIT and Simon Fraser University. Burnaby is renowned for it’s high tech industry including companies such as Electronic Arts and PMC Sierra. New Westminster Located in the centre of the Lower Mainland on a hillside along the north banks of the Fraser River is New Westminster. It’s a city known for its spectacular views of Golden Ears Mountains to the East, Mount Baker to the southeast and the Fraser River Estuary to the southwest. More than half the population of the Lower Mainland is concentrated east of Boundary Road and the current population trend continues to move people further east. This makes New Westminster both the geographic and demographic centre of the Lower Mainland. A visit to New Westminster uncovers some of the best parkland and natural vistas in the Lower Mainland. It also offers inviting walking trails, exciting leisure activities and state-of-the-art recreation facilities. At the heart of the waterfront is the Westminster Quay and Public market. Here you’ll find shops, dining, entertainment, and a walkway along the Fraser River. Along Columbia Street you’ll now find finely restored buildings with charming shops and cafes. Whether you’re looking to take the kids to a petting zoo, go to an art gallery in the park, visit a rose garden or take a dip at the Canada Games Pool, you’ll find it all in New Westminster. |
