| June 2003 Home Is Where The Heart Is
There’s no place like home. Even when you want to get away from it all.
Wouldn’t it be nice to combine the comforts of home with a little of the exotic? A place where you can relax, recuperate and rest from the stresses of everyday life without having to pack a bag or get on a plane? With a little imagination, you can have the best of both worlds.
Whether you have a large back yard in the suburbs or a small concrete patio in your condo in the city, you can still turn the most important place in your world – your home – into a private haven secreted away from the noise and confusion of modern life.
Gazebo If you’ve got the space, a small gazebo in the corner of your garden can set the stage for your retreat. A comfortable chair, a small table, some candles or incense and a pot of fragrant flowers might be all you need to feel pampered and relaxed.
Screening A simple bamboo screen can do wonders in creating a sense of privacy. A screen or trellis can block that ugly hydro box next door or prevent neighbours from peering onto your balcony. Plus you can plant climbers like clematis, passion fruit or grape vine in a pot at the bottom to give things an even more tropical feel.
Plants Even the smallest patio hanging basket, window box or rooftop barrel can be used to create a focal point for colourful, fragrant blooms, fresh vegetables or even strawberries. Plus, they’re portable so you can move them to wherever you need them most (whether it’s as a sun blocker or a people blocker).
Water It is well known that the sound of running water can help create a peaceful and serene atmosphere and there are fountains for even the smallest of balconies. If you have the luxury of space, a pond, and all the critters it attracts is a wonderful place to stop and quietly observe nature in action.
Birds Birds are a wonderful addition to any space. Put a small feeder on your balcony or a bird box in your backyard. The sound of birds chirping and singing can lift even the heaviest heart. Plus, they’re a natural insect predator so let them do their thing and your garden will benefit.
Once you create your own little getaway, you can revitalize yourself and experience the restful healing power of nature without going anywhere…except where your heart is.
