Tourist tricks and traps
You've packed your bags, secured your house, put the dog in the kennel and told the neighbours where you'll be. Now you're ready for your vacation, right? Not quite. You’ve only just begun. Here are a few tips to take with you on your holiday.
Cash:
- Do not keep your money in your suitcase. Keep it on you at all times and if possible, divide it up among the adults in your party.
- Carry a minimum amount of cash. It's a good idea to have a small amount of the local currency with you for taxis, tips etc.
- Hold your purse under your arm. Carry a wallet in an inside coat or front trouser pocket.
Car:
- Always lock your vehicle, even when you're driving.
- If your car is bumped from behind, signal the driver that you are heading to the nearest gas station. Don't get out of the car until there are other people around.
Cabana:
- Pack as lightly as you can and label each piece of luggage with your name and address. If at all possible, travel with carry on bags. Not only will this save you time on check-in and arrival, it also means that your bags don't leave your sight. Be sure your luggage locks.
- If the front desk loudly announces your room number when they give you your key, ask for another room.
- Keep your room key on your person when at the hotel pool, bar, or dining room and don't hang your purse or bag on chairs or restroom hooks.
- When you check-in always make sure to locate the fire exits, elevators and nearest phone. Then, plan the best way to exit in an emergency.
- Always lock the front and/or patio doors and windows of your hotel room, both while you're in it and when you leave. Never open your room door unless you know who is there.
- If you are offered hotel service that you didn’t ask for by someone who knocks on your door, call hotel security or the front desk to see if they have sent someone to your room.
Common Sense:
- Never tell anyone that you are travelling alone.
- Make sure your children know the name and address of where you are staying. Give them a list of places they can go to get help if they become separated from you.
- If traveling to a foreign country, photocopy all documents, including passport, credit cards and tickets, before leaving home and store copies in a hotel safe.
- Stay alert. Trust your instincts. Travel in pairs or groups, if possible. Enquire at your hotel front desk for places to avoid.
- And above all else, don't look vulnerable or lost. Walk with a purpose and stay alert to what's happening around you.
