Fall Clean Up

With the onset of autumn, we return to our routine of work or school and spend more time in our homes. Before the rains come and the days get too short, take the time to get your home and yard prepared for the cooler seasons. Here are a few simple tips to keep your home ship-shape as we leave the sunny days of summer and move into the crispness of autumn.

Clean your gutters

Leaves, sticks and other debris can make its way into your gutter and clog the drain. Instead of autumn and winter rain running down the pipes and onto the ground, it can seep into your house causing drips from ceilings and walls.

Check your heating system

Furnaces have been turned off for months. Have them serviced along with boilers and chimneys to prevent fire and smoke damage. It’s also a good time to check that your fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working.

Insulate your windows and doors

When the winds pick up, so can your heating bill. Check and repair caulk and weatherstripping if needed. You shouldn’t be able to see daylight around the edges. This will help prevent cold air from seeping in when the temperature drops.

Check your deck (and other handrails and steps)

Broken stairs and banisters are dangerous when the weather worsens. Poor visibility and rain and snow make steps more slippery than usual. Make repairs now before someone trips and is seriously injured.

Get your lawn in shape

Putting down winter fertilizer or seed started during the fall helps grass roots get established. Autumn is also the best time to aerate your lawn. If done in the spring, aerating allows weeds to spread; this does not happen in the fall.
