North Shore REALTORS rally together for local women's shelter

(North Vancouver, B.C.) - On Saturday, May 1 North Vancouver REALTORS held their second annual community garage sale to raise money for the SAGE Transition House, a refuge for battered women and their children. Thanks to the combined efforts of more than 30 REALTORS, over $4,000 was raised for the shelter's much needed computer equipment and educational software.

This one-of-kind garage sale, affectionately called "the Rolls Royce of all garage sales" by REALTOR volunteers, attracted a large crowd of locals who came to hunt for bargains, eat BBQ chicken satays and purchase draw tickets in the hopes of winning beautiful gift baskets, a brand new gas grill or an Oster bread maker.

"The SAGE Transition House is the only emergency shelter on the North Shore for battered women," says event coordinator Dorelle Andersen, "the Rolls Royce Garage Sale is our way of giving back to the community and raising awareness about domestic violence at the same time." Several months prior to the event, Realtor volunteers went through the community to collect clothing, housewares, books and other items for the sale. They also solicited a myriad of prizes and gift certificates from 46 generous Northshore merchants.

Founded in 1979, the SAGE Transition House offers emergency shelter for more than 3,500 women and children fleeing abusive family situations. It also provides crisis intervention, counselling, emotional support and legal information to women.
